How to Get Married in Croatia and the Legal Requirements for Getting Married

Getting married in Croatia is a simple matter if you have all the documentation needed. Getting the right documents at the right time is key to a seamless and successful wedding plan. Having the wrong papers or papers that are too old or not in order can delay or even cancel your wedding ceremony. That's why IAS Nika Travel Weddings works closely with you to ensure your wedding day is a smooth and delightful event.

IAS Nika Travel Weddings have put together some useful information guides to help you understand what is required. These guides are Civil Wedding Ceremonies in Croatia, Religious Wedding Ceremonies in Croatia, and the guide below on the combinations of civil and religious ceremonies.

There are two aspects to any wedding, the Civil Ceremony and the Religious Ceremony. Some people may chose to do just one ceremony, but most chose both. Either way, it important to decide how and where you want these two ceremonies to happen as they impact on your wedding day and it preparations.

Combinations of Civil and Religious Ceremonies

Civil Ceremony at home and Religious Ceremony or Blessing in Croatia

You might feel having your civil ceremony abroad somewhat daunting, and a lot of couples chose to do this at home, knowing they have all the legalities resolved and no worries about translations and getting official recognition back home. In which case, the only item you need concentrate on in Croatia is preparing your Religious ceremony and enjoying your beautiful day declaring your love for one another in front of your family, friends and loved ones.

We at IAS Nika Travel recommend this route if you are looking to save some money on your wedding. There are two main benefit of having your civil ceremony at home:

1) some friends and family wont be able to come to your Croatian wedding. For them you can celebrate your civil wedding at home, and can be a smaller affair.

2) If budgeting is a priority, its a lot cheaper and easier to have the civil ceremony at home. You will be saving yourselves at least a thousand pounds/euros immediately. A civil wedding in Croatia will require an extended trip or one extra trip to Croatia, a handful of documents to be legalised and translated, plus paying for the registrar and translator.

Civil Ceremony in Croatia

Some couples chose only to celebrate their wedding day with a Civil Ceremony. Having a Civil Service is more costly because it is a legal event and contractually binding between the Bride and Groom. A number of documents will need to be correctly prepared and translated. An Official Translator will also be need on the day.

Having a Civil Ceremony in the Registrar's Office is the cheapest option, but not necessarily the most attractive. Having the service away from the Registrar's Office and taking advantage of the beautiful Adriatic coast is understandably more costly.

The details of the process and documents required are given on this page:

Religious Ceremony or Blessings in Croatia

Any type of wedding can be accommodated for, and any religion (Roman Catholic, Church of England, Church of Ireland, Muslim, Orthodox, Hindu, Buddhist, Pagan and any other denomination). We have concentrated on Catholic and Anglican (Church of England, Church of Ireland) as they are the most requested, but the principles remain the same for all religions.

Some couples chose only to celebrate their religious ceremonies in Croatia, having already performed their civil formalities at home, or to simply reaffirm their vows on the beautiful Adriatic coast with their closest family and friends. This is the simplest arrangement as it requires the least preparation, documentation, and is the cheapest.

Unless the priest speaks English, you may wish to have a translator for you and your guests and they need not be an Official Translator.

Religious Ceremonies, be it a wedding ceremony or blessing, can take place almost anywhere in Croatia. You can chose from one of the beautiful churches, a lavish hotel, a stretch of Croatia's beautiful beaches, or the rolling hills of Zagorje and snowy mountains of the Alps. The range of locations is truly spectacular.

You will need to decide on the location you want your wedding to take place, and call us to arrange for a Priest to be present. We will arrange for the priest to be available at you chosen destination and ascertain the exact documentation and fees necessary. This can be arranged well in advance and potentially fairly quickly. Some priests speak English, some do not. We can provide a translator if required.

Religious and Civil Ceremony Together in Croatia

Having the two ceremonies on the same day, time and place is the most common arrangement. It is up to the Bride and Groom which ceremony is conducted first. All the requirements of the civil and church authorities must be met.

Religious and Civil Ceremonies in Croatia but at different times

The advantages of this strategy are pretty clear; it costs less but still keeps the excitement and magic in Croatia.

Wherever you have you wedding a Registrar will probably be close by. If so, and to save yourselves a same fortune, you could have your civil ceremony at the Registrar's office in the morning with your witnesses, and have your religious ceremony or blessing with your family and guests later on.

Lastly, having a low key civil ceremony means you can concentrate on the bigger event and have less to worry about.
